The Fool’s Journey
Every tarot deck tells one long story before it tells you anything else: the Fool’s Journey. It starts with the Fool, card zero, stepping off a cliff with nothing but a small bag and a lot of trust, and it ends 21 cards later at the World, having been through every high and low the deck has to offer. Once you see the Major Arcana as one continuous journey instead of 22 separate cards, the rest of the deck starts making a lot more sense.
That’s only half the deck, though. The Minor Arcana, the 56 cards split into Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles, fills in the day-to-day detail: the small wins, the money stuff, the arguments, the ideas. If the Major Arcana is the big chapters of the story, the Minor Arcana is everything that happens inside them.
The Fool’s Journey, Card By Card
Here’s how the story actually unfolds. The Fool takes the leap with nothing but instinct to guide him. The Magician shows him he already has every tool he needs, he just has to use them. The High Priestess teaches him to slow down and trust what he can’t yet explain. The Empress introduces him to abundance, creativity, and growth. The Emperor hands him structure and boundaries to build on. The Hierophant connects him to tradition and the wisdom of those who came before. The Lovers asks him to make a real choice about who he wants to become. The Chariot is the willpower it takes to actually move forward once that choice is made.
Strength isn’t brute force, it’s the quiet courage to stay soft in a hard moment. The Hermit pulls him inward for a season of reflection. Wheel of Fortune reminds him that some things are simply out of his hands. Justice asks him to own the consequences of his choices, fairly and honestly. The Hanged Man forces a pause and a new perspective he couldn’t get any other way. Death clears out what’s no longer serving him, painful as that can be. Temperance is the healing that follows, blending the old and new into something whole.
The Devil tests him with old patterns, fear, and self-imposed limits. The Tower breaks whatever illusion he was still holding onto, fast and without warning. The Star restores hope right when he needs it most. The Moon walks him through uncertainty and the parts of himself he can’t fully see yet. The Sun brings clarity, joy, and confidence. Judgement is the reckoning, a call to rise, forgive, and step into who he’s become. And finally, The World is completion: the journey finished, with a new one already waiting to begin.
Here’s the thing: this isn’t only about your own journey. You might be pulling cards for yourself, for a friend, for a client, for whoever’s watching and wondering what their card means. Either way, every pull is a snapshot of exactly where someone is on the Fool’s Journey right now: leaping off a cliff, deep in a Hermit season, or picking up the pieces after a Tower moment. And no matter which part of the story you land in, there’s always a way through it. That’s really the point of all this. So next time you draw a card, don’t stop at looking up what it means. Ask where in the journey you (or they) actually are, and trust that whatever comes next is already on its way.
