The Hermit

The Hermit tarot card
1The star inside his lantern: he found it, and now it needs shining out rather than kept in a box.
2He is frozen at the top of the mountain. He could put that lantern down and be free any time he wanted.
3The grey cloak and the grey beard: all of it is wisdom. He has been through the difficult part already.
4He is up there on his own by choice, and that is the bit that has to end.
The Come Down From the Mountain CardYou’ve already done the hard part. The work now is letting people see it.
  • You have done the hard part
  • Come down and share it
  • Getting out of hermit mode
In a reading

You have been through a difficult stretch and you have something worth saying because of it. This card is the end of the retreat, not an invitation into one.

Deeper meaning

He has to come down from the mountain

Most people read this card as go inward, and I read it the other way around. He has already been through the dark night of the soul. Every bit of the imagery on him is wisdom, the grey cloak, the grey beard, and the light he found is sitting inside that lantern. The trouble is that is where it is staying. When people go into hermit mode they get comfortable up there, because it is quiet and it feels safe after something hard. But he needs to come down and share what he has learned, and that is the thing that actually sets him free. If you are an introvert about it, start small. I am not telling you to go and become a different person.

In the good stuff

You’re coming down off the mountain and letting people see what you learned.
