Set one standard and hold it

Let Yourself Be Happy Without Asking Why

Years ago I lived in a tiny apartment in Seattle with my brother. We had almost no money. On paper it was the broke chapter nobody wants to be stuck in. And somehow those are still some of the best memories of my whole life. The strange part is that I barely enjoyed them while they were happening, because I spent the entire time staring at the finish line instead of the room I was actually standing in.

Here is what I keep seeing this week. Something good is starting to happen for you, and instead of letting it be good, you are already asking why. Is this real. Can I keep it. What is the catch. That questioning feels responsible. It is actually the thing quietly draining the joy out of the exact thing you wanted.

The heart of it: you do not owe anyone a reason for a good thing. Let yourself be happy first, and build the structure around it second.

How to actually enjoy it

  • Stop asking why. If something feels good right now, you are allowed to let it feel good without an investigation. Not everything that shows up needs a background check before you smile about it.
  • Do not rush it. The pull right now is to grab the good thing and lock it down fast. Pressure is exactly what makes it slip. Move at the pace of building something that lasts, not catching something before it runs off.
  • Let joy point the way. When you are unsure of the next step, notice what actually feels good and take one small move toward it. You do not need every answer to head in the right direction.
  • Loosen your grip. The tighter you try to control how this goes, the more it wriggles away. Decide what you want, then let it breathe. The less you clamp down, the steadier it holds.
  • Give it something solid. Happiness sits better with a little structure under it. Pick one practical thing that supports the good thing, a routine, a plan, a bit of money set aside, so it has somewhere to stand.

You do not have to earn a good moment by worrying about it. You just have to be in it.

None of this means going numb to reality or pretending problems are not real. It means you are allowed to stand inside a good thing without immediately trying to cage it, and the calmer you are with it, the more room it has to grow.

So here is the real question: what is the good thing you are currently talking yourself out of enjoying? Name it, let it be good for one full day without asking why, and notice what happens. If you want to hear how this is showing up for your sign, watch this week’s current readings, I go through all twelve.
